Education and community outreach play an important role in the SSO’s mission and programming. From student apprenticeships to a new El Sistema-based collaboration, the SSO works to cultivate music education and engagement within our community. Programs and Initiatives
UNIVERSO is a new after school arts program in East Chicago that involves seven different organizations in the Northwest Indiana region, including the South Shore Orchestra. Modeled after Venezuela’s El Sistema program, UNIVERSO participants are able to engage with art, music, spoken word and dance. UNIVERSO also focuses on youth development and building life skills. The SSO takes part in the collaboration by having instructors teach the fundamentals of music to participating students. Students also receive instrumental music lessons. More information on UNIVERSO can be found at http://www.eastchicagoarts.org/education-in-the-schools/universo/
